The Knowing: Mariel & Alex
What I loved the most about getting to know Alex and Mariel's love story is what I call 'The Knowing' - a high level of clarity, assuredness, and confidence one has toward an action, person and/or themselves.
During our planning call, it was clear Alex understood his soon-to-be fiance. He spoke about Mariel with a warmth and certainty that made it clear he wanted their proposal to be more than another day out—it would be a tribute to her that took years, one long distance relationship, and Mariel's bestie Sarah, to make happen. Alex’s attention to detail, from knowing which proposal location and post-proposal restaurant, was a testament to how deeply he understood and cared for is partner, Mariel.
When their chilly yet sunny February day finally came, the energy was electric. The setting—a cozy spot along the Hoboken waterfront with the glowing cityscape in the distance was lit perfectly. Despite a game-time decision to pivot our location due to construction - Alex was even-keeled. He even appeared to approach his 'knee drop' spot with such confidence that I almost believed it would be over before I could swing around to capture it!
For me, capturing this proposal was beyond taking photos; it was about preserving Alex & Mariel's 'Knowing' of each other—their clarity of believing in each other's love on that cold day, and every day forward.
After Mariel accepted Alex's proposal, and our session began, I had to ask Alex: "Where did you hide the ring?" To which he responded, "My sock."
Another knowing: He was confident it was the one place that would go undetected by Mariel.
As our session at the waterfront wrapped and we parted ways, I then made my way downtown to Dear Maud's to wait with about 60 of their closest friends and family for what would be Mariel's 2nd surprise of the day: Alex had led her to believe they would be enjoying a private dinner together!
